Security and safety systems
If your electricity supply is interrupted, some security and safety equipment may be affected. This information describes checks you can make which will help to minimise the disruption to this equipment due to a power cut.
Burglar alarms
The National Security Inspectorate (NSI) is the independent regulatory body which works to ensure that its Recognised Firms install high quality, reliable security systems according to British Standards. Check whether or not your system is installed by an NSI Recognised Firm.
- Systems which have been installed by these firms must have battery back-up so that the alarm will still work for a useful minimum period of time in a power cut.
- You can contact NSI for a complete list of recognised firms in your area by calling 0870 205 0000 or email nacoss@nsi.org.uk.
Access systems
- Many of these systems have battery back-up to store entry codes and other system information during a power cut.
- For safety reasons, any electronic locking systems should automatically switch to unlocked if the electricity supply is interrupted. Check to see if this is the case on your system.
- You may want to make alternative security arrangements if you know the power cut is going to happen.
- When the electricity is restored, double check that access systems have returned to their locked state.
Fire alarms
Many fire alarms will switch to battery back-up mode automatically if the electricity goes off. Make sure the alarm is tested regularly and that it is properly serviced and maintained.
It's best to contact the installer or maintenance company for specific details about how your own alarm may be affected in a power cut.
Emergency and security lighting
Most emergency lighting systems have battery back-up to provide power while the electricity is off, although many security lights don't. Systems with battery back-up will usually recharge automatically when the electricity comes back on.
Because individual systems vary so much, we advise you to contact the installer for information.
