Freezers and household appliances
This information helps you to prepare for a power cut in your home. By taking a little time to find out which household appliances may be affected in advance, you'll be able to minimise the inconvenience if your electricity is switched off.
Fridges and freezers
In most cases, freezer contents will not be affected by a power cut, but check the manufacturer's handbook to be sure. To preserve freezer contents as long as possible, use the following helpful hints:
- Keep the freezer door closed. If possible, take anything you need out of the freezer before the electricity is switched off. Don't put fresh, unfrozen food into the freezer until after the power is restored.
- Fill any empty space inside the freezer. Small cardboard boxes packed with newspaper are ideal for this. You could also cover the freezer with a blanket, helping to keep it cold.
- If the freezer has a fast freeze mode, turn it on about an hour before a planned cut.
Labour saving devices
Some dishwashers and washing machines, if left switched on, will resume their cycles automatically when the power is restored after a cut. However, appliances with electronic timers and controls won't and will need to be reset.
If you know your electricity is going to be switched off, try to avoid starting this type of appliance beforehand.
Home entertainment
Many video recorders, along with some hi-fi systems and other equipment, have electronic clocks or timers. Check to see if these have battery back-up. If not, you'll probably need to reset them when the power comes back on.
It's particularly important to switch off any Satellite Receiving equipment before the start of a planned power cut. Don't switch this on again until after the power has been restored.
